Situated near Tower Hamlets Town Hall, The Royal London Hospital, Queen Mary University, and the vibrant communities of Stepney Green, Bethnal Green, and Whitechapel, John Scurr Primary School has a long and proud history serving families in the heart of East London.
Our school honours the legacy and values of John and Julia Scurr, who fought for equality and access to education for East End families nearly 100 years ago. Building on John Scurr’s belief in fairness, equality, and a supportive community, we foster these values today through our mutual code of Respect, Resilience, Resourcefulness, Readiness, and Reflection.
We are known for our warm, inclusive ethos and high expectations for all learners, encapsulated in our motto: “Be the Best that you can be”.
We offer an IQM-accredited inclusive, enriched, and knowledge-rich curriculum (featuring the Unity CUSP curriculum) alongside extensive outings, extra-curricular activities, and sports and wellbeing initiatives that have earned us the Gold Healthy School Award.
Through our dedicated team, strong pastoral support, and close partnerships with parents and carers, we work hard to ensure that no child is left behind and that every pupil is nurtured into a confident, curious learner.
Beginning in September 2026, John Scurr and Bonner Primary Schools started a formalised partnership as a soft federation.
Both John Scurr and Bonner are strong schools with proven track records, independent visions, and unique identities that make them cornerstones of education in Tower Hamlets.
Under this alliance, both schools will remain distinct entities with their own individual characters, values, and staff. However, by coming together under a shared Executive Leadership Team and a dedicated Strategic Partnership Committee, we are uniting our expertise and resources.
As Executive Headteacher overseeing the strategic direction across both school communities, I am supported at John Scurr by our dedicated Head of School, Keeley, who leads the day-to-day running of the school to ensure consistency and continuity for our children and parents.
